The Goodness of God + Sunday Morning Resources

TCC • December 17, 2021

The Apostle Paul wrote, “He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 NIV

He also wrote these words from Philippians 1:6, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” So, folks, no matter how things look, God Is In Charge!

Tuesday marked a momentous event in my cancer treatment journey and classroom. This was the day I went back to UCSF to remove the stent from my esophagus that was installed after a complication during my surgery. I woke up Wednesday morning, exhausted from being back at the hospital again for yet another procedure. Here’s the thought running through my mind during the entire prep for the procedure: Where is the finish line? Where is the finish line?

Well, on the one hand, I’ve reached the finish line laid out before me for treating my esophageal cancer. This journey was way more complicated than words like chemo/radiation and surgery that lasted way longer than I would have expected. June 14 was my first chemo treatment, and December 14 was my last procedure in this journey. Wow. That was way more time than I could have ever imagined when this began.

So, here I sit with my cancer cleared, a big YIPPEE! I want to thank God, my lovely and caring wife, an army of servant-minded friends and loved ones who offered us help, and of course, the fantastic staff God has given us. I can’t even begin to express my gratitude for how our staff team has carried on in my diminished capacity. I am so proud of them. I’m also aware of your heart to serve that was expressed to my family. Thank you. I’ve sure had a sensitivity wake-up for those whose lives are disrupted by cancer and other illnesses like COVID.

I guess I heard from God this morning that this wasn’t necessarily the finish line, but rather, this is the starting line for the rest of my life. I still have a race to run. I still have a purpose to fulfill. I still have a passion to express. I still claim these verses from Psalm 27 today, “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of God in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord. Stand strong and take heart.” That’s where my focus is today! Will you claim these same verses for your lives and the life of our church? God is not finished with us yet!

I can’t wait to see you on Sunday. Yes, God willing, I will be in church on Sunday!

Here are some upcoming opportunities to SHARE LIFE and SPREAD HOPE to our family and community.

HOLIDAY SERVE OPPS are in full swing. Let me encourage you to go to our website and look at all the ways we’re serving our community this holiday season. Even though the baskets and stockings have all been received and delivered, our community has many places where we can serve and help. People tell us with deep appreciation that our engagement really boosts the hopes and spirits of those who are in desperate situations in these challenging times.

It’s YEAR-END GIFT time and I want to encourage you to give a special gift to our church as an act of worship and appreciation to God for how He has used TCC in your life over the past year. The beauty of this giving opportunity is that it allows us to serve even more people throughout the year generously. You can get more information on our website.

LOVE ALL is the theme for our Christmas services this year. People resonated with John Lennon when he sang, “All You Need Is Love” because we live in a day where love seems to be in short supply. Though catchy, John’s lyrics and tune are only wishful thinking or sentimentality unless we receive love from above and share it with others. The service will feature a family to guide us to light the white Christ candle. Then, we’ll sing some fun Christmas carols and listen to a short message about love. We will end with a special candle lighting moment as we thank God for His work in 2021, or memorialize a person who has passed away, or express our hope that we will see the land of God’s goodness all while we sing Silent Night. Please make sure to plan which service you want to attend and invite friends and family to join you.

THIS SUNDAY, we continue our Advent series by focusing on the core concept of this series. SLOW DOWN, SPEND LESS, and GIVE MORE are all part of a bigger idea: WORSHIP FULLY. That’s what we’ll look at this week as we consider the most famous of Christmas songs – The Magnificat. I am so eager to be brought to the throne of Heaven by these fantastic lyrics.

Joyfully living everyday life on mission in intimacy with Jesus and others,

New Paragraph

By TCC July 17, 2026
It’s easy to think that becoming more like Jesus requires us to separate ourselves from the world around us. But what if we’ve misunderstood what it means to follow Jesus and live righteously? This Sunday, we’ll continue our journey through the book of Acts as Peter discovers that God’s law was never intended to build barriers, but bridges. We’ll wrestle with a question that every follower of Jesus needs to answer: Have I been living as an ambassador to my community, or have I been insulating myself from it? I think you’ll find that this story speaks directly into the way we live today. Speaking of living as ambassadors to our community, one of the ways we get to put that into practice is through Hope for Nevada County this Saturday from 9am-noon at Nevada Union High School. Thousands of our neighbors will come for practical help like backpacks, school supplies, shoes, haircuts, and other resources. It’s a simple opportunity to reflect the heart of Jesus through tangible acts of love. If you’d like to find out more about the event, visit hope4nevadacounty.org . We all long to see God do the extraordinary. We pray for breakthroughs, miracles, and unmistakable displays of His power. But what if, in our fixation on things only God can do, we’ve overlooked our part? This Sunday, as we continue our journey through Acts, we'll discover a surprising pattern in the way God accomplishes His purposes — one that has the power to reshape the way we think about faithfulness, ministry, and our everyday lives. Also, don't miss the One Voice Worship Night this Saturday from 6-8pm here at Twin Cities. Churches from across Nevada County will gather as one body to worship Jesus together. We'd love to have you join us for this special evening of unity and praise. Most of us want God's help. We want His peace when life feels chaotic. His guidance when we're uncertain. His power when we're struggling. But what if we're more interested in what God can do for us than in God Himself? This weekend, we'll continue our journey through Acts as we encounter a surprising story about a man who wanted God's power without God's lordship — and discover why that temptation is still alive today. Join us as we wrestle with a question that cuts straight to the heart: Do I want God, or do I just want what God can do for me? Also, just a reminder that tomorrow is our Ride for Hope motorcycle event that is raising shoes for Hope for Nevada County. Whether you ride or not, you’re welcome to swing by the church anytime between 10am-noon to watch the spectacle (and hopefully bring an unused pair of shoes for a student). Today is the final day of VBS, and I want to celebrate what God has been doing this week. Throughout this week, over 250 kids have been exploring one life-changing question: “Who is Jesus to me?” And yesterday, dozens of children made the eternity-altering decision to place their faith in Jesus as Savior and Lord. We are incredibly grateful for your prayers throughout the week and for the many, many volunteers who invested their time, energy, and love to make VBS possible. Thank you for helping us create an environment where kids could encounter Jesus in a meaningful way. This Sunday, we'll continue our journey through the book of Acts as we look at Stephen, one of those deacons we talked about last week, being confronted by the religious leaders. In a world filled with noise, conflict, and constant distractions, Stephen shows us what it looks like to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. This weekend, we will explore a key question that is pertinent to every one of us: What is shaping the way you see the world? Because what captures our attention ultimately shapes our perspective, influences our decisions, and determines how we interpret the circumstances around us. Growth is exciting — until it starts creating problems. This Sunday, we'll be in Acts 6, where the early church faces one of its first major challenges. As more people come to faith, needs begin slipping through the cracks, tensions rise, and the apostles are forced to answer an important question: How does a growing church stay healthy without losing sight of its mission? If you've ever felt frustrated with the church or wondered if you have a part to play, this passage has something to say to you. We'll find that God never intended for ministry to be carried by a few professionals, but by an entire church empowered by the Holy Spirit. Also, VBS begins Monday! Our campus will be overrun with hundreds of children spending the week learning what it means to follow Jesus. We'd love your prayers for our volunteers, leaders, families, and especially the kids who will be hearing the gospel throughout the week. Please pray that God will move powerfully in young hearts and that many children will take meaningful steps toward Jesus. We live in a world that's changing faster than ever. It can feel like the ground beneath our feet is constantly moving. But while it’s easy to focus on what’s changing around us, God is deeply interested in the change happening within us. This Sunday in Walking With the Holy Spirit , we'll see what happens when ordinary people fully surrender to the Spirit's work. Before He sends His people out into mission, He shapes them into the likeness of Jesus. Many of us want God to change our circumstances. But what if His first priority is changing us? This weekend, as we continue our journey through Acts, we’ll pick up the story right after Peter and John are threatened and told to stop speaking about Jesus. What they do next is both surprising and deeply challenging: they don’t panic, posture, or plot — they pray. But it’s not the kind of prayer most of us default to. They pray a Spirit-saturated prayer that is grounded in God’s sovereignty and boldly ask for the courage to follow Jesus even if it costs them dearly. If you, like me, are in the habit of praying safe, sanitized prayers that focus on your comfort and avoidance of conflict, then this is a conversation you won’t want to miss. Come ready to worship and to ask the Holy Spirit to give you the boldness to live as an ambassador for Jesus. As we head into Memorial Day weekend, we’re mindful of the cost many have paid, and we’re grateful for the freedoms we often take for granted. As we continue our journey through Acts, we’ll pick up the story right as momentum builds in the early church and resistance rises with it. A public miracle sparks a public confrontation, and Peter and John find themselves face-to-face with the very power brokers who tried to silence Jesus. What happens next is a striking picture of what the Holy Spirit does in ordinary people when fear, pressure, and the temptation to stay quiet collide with faith. If you’ve ever felt the tension between self-protection and obedience, this Sunday will be both convicting and encouraging. I’m still flying high from last Sunday’s baptisms. What an incredible celebration as we got to witness 41 brothers and sisters in Christ go public with their faith through baptism. It’s a powerful reminder that God is still changing lives and adding to our number those being saved. This weekend, we’re turning our attention to an issue that is plaguing our culture and readily impacts our community. We live in the most connected age in history and yet our society is suffering from an epidemic of loneliness and isolation. So, what does God offer as an antidote? This Sunday, we’ll look at the kind of community the Spirit formed in the early church — real relationships, shared life, and a love so tangible that people couldn’t help but take notice. And we’ll explore some tangible steps to help nurture that same kind of hope-filled, transformative community here in Nevada County. I hope you’ll join us. Speaking of sharing, today is the day to donate any items for our Sisters Closet clothing exchange. This is one of those tangible ways we love our neighbors and I hope you’ll take advantage of it. You can drop gently loved clothing items off at the church today between 9am-7pm, and then come back tomorrow between 9am-12pm to update your wardrobe.
