Voting and Politics and Faith

TCC • October 22, 2020

Let’s talk voting and politics and faith! I hope you’re still with me after that introduction. We all know that VOTING MATTERS, and yet in the last presidential election, only 56% of registered voters cast their ballots on election day. That means that over 100 million people did not vote. When you realize how close the elections are in our day and age, it’s just not good citizenship not to cast our ballot. It’s a freedom we hold dear. This election year is full of more polarizing views and  confounding issues than any I can ever remember. I want to impress upon you that voting according to your Biblical conscience is so important, but probably more important this year than ever before.

Will you make sure to make your voice heard between now and November 3 by voting?

I wanted to take a few moments to be clear about what I’ve been saying about the upcoming election and the way our church has always approached the political process.

  • We believe in the importance of elections.
  • We believe that as Followers of Jesus, we have a responsibility to engage by voting and influencing the political process.
  • We believe that every person in America deserves the right to vote according to their deeply held values.
  • We believe that loving people like Jesus did is our prime directive for how we act and respond to those who have different political views than we do.
  • We believe that life will go on after the election, and we want to be part of unifying our country by bringing us together according to our common values.
  • We believe that God has called us to be people who LOVE EVERYONE ALWAYS no matter their political persuasion or belief system.

At the same time, I’m not saying that political positions and platforms don’t matter. We get better through struggle, competition, and cooperation. We must be strong in our beliefs and convictions.

I recently heard Pastor Ray Johnston, whom I respect greatly, say this about how to approach the political issues of our day. “We can’t ignore the political platforms and positions because they matter. And the reason we need to engage is this: Values need to be sharpened. Great changes need to be brought about. Great people need to be put in charge. Our country needs to be moved toward being a place where every single child and adult created by God needs to be given equal opportunity to thrive regardless of race, economic condition, and background. People need to grow up in a world that is safe. People need to grow up in a world where they can thrive.”

Twin Cities family, we must engage in the political process we’ve been afforded as Americans in this great nation. We must be courageous. We must be steadfast to stand up for what is best for all people. But in order to have that kind of world, we must be a people of unity. As Pastor Ray Johnston recently said, “You do not put a country together by tearing it apart.”

Last week I gave my perspective on voting. Here it is again: “People ask me to give them guidance about voting or want me to speak up for their cause or against the cause of another. The best guidance I can give is to vote according to the person or policy or platform that will do the most to protect those who are most vulnerable in our land and benefit the most people while allowing everyone the dignity to pursue their divine destiny and discover their God-given identity as they become all He made them to be.”

Whatever your voting choice is, will you agree with me that unity is more important than division? I hope we can be part of God’s redemptive and healing work in our community and world as we share the love of Jesus with everyone regardless of their political position.

I want to invite you to join us in front of the building – between the prow and the cross – on Sunday, November 1 at 10:15am to pray for the election. We’ll be praying for God to guide the voting and the ramifications in our country no matter who wins. We’ll be praying for civility and humility as we move forward with positive attitudes to help our nation be the best it can be.

Fall Family Festival is just NINE days away, and I’m extremely pumped about our new look for Fall Family Festival for this COVID-19 year. You can look at our website and see the plan John Fairchild and Mare Dibert put together to help our community have a fun and free event for the entire family – but the kids are the ones who will like it most. We’ve served our community 15 years now, and even with the COVID-19 restrictions in place, we believe we can offer a safe experience.

There are three things we need that will be essential to pulling this off: candy, volunteers, and invites. Please drop your candy off at the church or order from your favorite online retailer and have it shipped directly to TCC. You can sign up to serve online or at church and go ahead and use our website link to invite your friends while you’re at it.

Church is back in the house now! That’s right. We’re meeting together each week for great worship, singing, teaching, prayer, and fellowship. So, I’m inviting you to make your way back. Some of you may not be able to because you are considered at-risk or in a vulnerable category. I understand that. If that’s you, we’ll have a seat waiting for you when you return. But, for the rest of you, I’ve noticed how much joy there is as I connect with people before and after our services. We have seats available. We’d love to see you this week as we continue our Uncommon Sense series.

We will be looking in detail at the “Path of Wisdom” on Sunday. If you want to read ahead, you can open your Bible to Proverbs 4. I hope this Sunday will be the week you decide to make your way back. Remember, we have a seat for you.

One way you can go deeper and be even more inspired through our series on Proverbs is to make it a goal to read it each day. Proverbs has 31 chapters so I’m inviting you to join me and make a commitment to read one chapter per day. For example, today is October 22, so you would read Proverbs 22. Just read the Proverb that corresponds with the day. I like to listen to the Proverbs on the YouVersion Bible APP. You might want to try that, too. Let’s grow in wisdom together.

During this time when it’s impossible for us all to be on campus together, please make sure to stay engaged online if you can’t be here with us either outside or inside. Our services will continue to be streamed live at 9:00 and 11:00am, or you can watch them on demand any time you want right from our
website or APP. Here’s an idea: When you’re watching online, please invite your friends to join you. If you haven’t downloaded the TCC APP, just go to the APP store and search for TCC GRASS VALLEY and download it today.

We plan to add live music back in as soon as possible, but until we do, our Worship Arts Team will keep recording quality and inspiring song sets each week that will allow us to engage in worship together. We will still have the outdoor venue available for those who want to have more space and freedom. We have tents outside. Each week we’ll continue to adapt and flex as we expand that opportunity at both 9:00 and 11:00am.

Let me encourage our young families that we have space for you and to keep checking the website for new activities.  Please make sure to register your kiddos on our website before you arrive.

Our Student Ministry Team has moved to a format on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30pm at the church that will allow our students to engage. Junior High students meet with their leaders on one end of the building and High School students and their leaders meet on the other. Students are also meeting at 10:30am on Sundays for connect time and donuts, and then they attend the 11:00am service together. Make sure to encourage your students to be here because they need community in ways they may not even be aware.

Joyfully living everyday life on mission in intimacy with Jesus and others,

What a week it’s been! Our campus has been filled with laughter, learning, and life-changing moments as over 270 kids enjoyed an amazing week at Vacation Bible School. Meanwhile, more than 50 students have been away at youth camp, growing in faith and friendship. A huge thank you to every parent, volunteer, and leader who made these incredible experiences possible! Speaking of investing in the next generation, with all the Father’s Day excitement, we almost forgot to mention that last week marked 20 years since we moved into our current building! This milestone comes at a perfect time — together, we just crossed the $100,000 mark toward our Investing in the Future campaign. I know I haven’t talked much about it (I really don’t like talking about money), but we’re trusting God to help us raise a total of $600,000 to repair our roof, façade, and HVAC so our building remains a safe, welcoming place for decades to come — and to help build a church for a growing community in Uganda. To learn more or join in, click here . This Sunday, we’ll tackle one of life’s biggest questions: What really happens when we die? Do we go straight to Heaven , or do our souls wait until Jesus returns? What will eternity actually be like? Will it be an endless worship service in the clouds — and will we know our loved ones when we get there? To help us explore these questions, I’ll be joined by Gregory Ingram, director of Anew Day and a former hospice chaplain with nearly 20 years of experience walking alongside people in their final days. You won’t want to miss this meaningful conversation. I’m so grateful to be on this adventure of following Jesus together. This Sunday is Father’s Day, and we know it can stir up all kinds of emotions. For some, it’s a day of gratitude and great memories. For others, it’s more complicated. That’s why we’re asking a big question this weekend: Is God really a good Father? Because let’s be honest, some of what we read in the Old Testament can make God seem angry, distant, or even harsh. But what if those difficult passages are meant to be read through the lens of Jesus, the Son who came not to protect us from the Father, but to show us who He truly is? We’ll explore some of those tough questions honestly and discover a clearer picture of God’s heart. Plus, we’ll celebrate Communion together as a tangible reminder that in Christ, we are fully loved and fully welcomed home. The single most asked question we got was some form of the following: If God is good, why does He let us suffer? Maybe you’ve asked it in a hospital room, or in the middle of a sleepless night. Maybe you’re asking it right now. If so, you’re not alone. It’s one of the deepest and most difficult questions of faith, and we’re facing it head on this weekend as we continue our Beyond Doubt series. We’ll explore what the Bible says about suffering and how viewing it through the lens of Jesus can shift our perspective. It won’t erase the pain, but it may help us see that God has not abandoned us in it. In fact, He may be closer than we ever imagined. If your heart is heavy or your hope feels thin, come. Let’s seek God’s presence and peace — together. This Sunday, we’re continuing our Beyond Doubt series with a conversation I’ve been really looking forward to. I’ll be sitting down with Dr. David Timms, Dean of New Testament and Leadership at Jessup University to talk about how we make sense of the Bible as a whole. More specifically, we will discuss the lens which he suggests best brings the whole of Scripture into focus and reveals the heart of God most clearly. It’ll be an honest, thoughtful conversation about questions many of us have had — especially when different parts of the Bible seem to paint very different pictures of God. David has a gift for making deep theology accessible, and I think you’ll find his insights both challenging and encouraging (his accent is pretty awesome, as well). If you’ve ever struggled with how to read Scripture or wondered how it all fits together, this one’s for you. This Sunday, we’re continuing our Beyond Doubt series with a crucial follow-up to last week’s message on trusting the Bible. Now that we’ve established what the Bible is, we’re turning our attention to how we read it — because let’s face it, the Bible has been used to justify both beautiful and terrible things. So how do we make sure we’re interpreting it responsibly? We’ll talk about why context matters, how our personal lens can unintentionally distort God’s Word, and why a single verse — ripped out of its context — can be twisted to say almost anything. You’ll learn a practical, easy-to-remember approach to reading the Bible faithfully and responsibly — not just devotionally. If you’ve ever struggled with conflicting interpretations or felt unsure about how to make sense of the Bible, this message is for you. Together, we will discover how to let God’s word shape us — without being reshaped by us. This Sunday, we continue our Beyond Doubt series by asking one of the most foundational questions of all: Can I trust the Bible? For many of us, the Bible has shaped what we believe about God, ourselves, and the world. But have you ever wondered how this ancient library of books came to be? How the early church decided what made the cut? And whether what we read today matches what was originally written? We'll explore how the Bible was formed, and evidence for why it's still trustworthy and relevant today. If you've ever struggled with doubts or wrestled with tough questions about the Bible, this message is for you. You just might come away with a renewed sense of confidence in the truth you hold in your hands. Last Sunday, we got to celebrate as 31 of our brothers and sisters in Christ went public with their faith through baptism. What a powerful moment for our church family! And we’re not slowing down. This weekend, we’re pulling out all the stops to make Mother’s Day meaningful and memorable. First, there will be donuts. Because what’s a celebration without some guilt-free carbs? Sweeter still, we’ll hear from Kim Thompson, the founding mother of Twin Cities Church. Kim will be sharing a timely message about doubt and identity — how easy it is to forget who we are when life gets loud. If you’ve ever wrestled with your worth, your calling, or your place in God’s story, this message is for you. Then we’ll close the service with Family Dedications — a beautiful moment where we not only dedicate children to the Lord, but also commission parents for the sacred journey of raising them in faith. Whether you come with your mom, your kids, or just a heart ready to celebrate, you’ll be surrounded by family. We can’t wait to celebrate with you this weekend. Last weekend, we kicked off our Beyond Doubt series by voicing something many of us feel, but rarely say out loud: we have questions that can feel at odds with our faith. But as we’re exploring in this series, doubt isn’t the enemy of belief — it can actually be the doorway to a stronger, more resilient faith. This Sunday, we’re taking on a topic that’s increasingly common, yet often misunderstood: deconstruction . What do you do when the version of Christianity you inherited begins to crack under the weight of hard questions, disappointment, or pain? Is it possible to examine and pull apart your faith without walking away from it completely? We believe it is. This weekend’s message is for anyone who’s ever wrestled with their spiritual worldview — or walked alongside someone who is. We’ll talk about what it means to ask honest questions, seek real truth, and reconstruct a faith that’s stronger on the other side. Join us this Sunday as we move beyond doubt — together. Easter is almost here — and we’ve got a full weekend planned to connect and celebrate as a church family! Here’s everything coming up: Good Friday Community Service – 12pm @ TCC Join us Friday at Noon at Twin Cities Church as we gather with churches from across Nevada County to remember the triumph of the cross. It will be a wonderful time of worship, unity, and gratitude for the grace Jesus purchased for us. Egg Hunt & Pancake Breakfast – Saturday at 9am Bring the whole family out for a fun morning filled with pancakes, eggs (the plastic kind), and connection with our local community. It’s a great way to build memories and share the joy of Easter with our neighbors. Easter Sunday – He Is Risen! Celebrate the resurrection with us on Sunday at one of our three Easter services: 8:15, 9:45, & 11:30am . This is the perfect opportunity to invite a friend, neighbor, or coworker to come experience hope and new life in Jesus. The 8:15am service is typically the lightest attended, so if you’re flexible, join us early and help make space for guests later in the morning. We can’t wait to see you this weekend!
