Thoughts On Confession

TCC • September 3, 2020

Kimberly and I just finished our video devotional for this week. After Sunday’s message on confession and the response I received, we felt led to expand the  thoughts from the message just a bit more. Confession can be one of those confusing spiritual disciplines. Some people associate it with guilt and shame. Others have a view of confession as the way to gain God’s approval. And still others see it as something that they need to do to earn God’s forgiveness.

This is why it is so good to have a clear view of confession. Here’s my definition: Confession is agreeing with God about what He says about me (primarily through His Word) based upon His character and righteousness. He is the One who determines my need for confession. At the same time, He is the One who meets me right where I am in that moment of decision with His mercy, grace, and forgiveness.

Confession is not meant to make us feel bad. On the contrary, it’s meant to help us feel good. As James Brown used to sing, “I feel good.” That’s what confession does for us. At the same time, though, it’s sobering when we realize how far from God we’ve actually moved. This is why confession is a discipline we will want to regularly practice.

We can do that through our
2020 Church Prayer. Every Thursday we take time to focus on asking Him to forgive our sins as we have forgiven the sins of others. It’s at that moment when we say, “Forgive us our sins,” that we can stop and confess them. I was told one time that since we commit our sins one at a time, it’s good for us to confess our sins one at a time. Once again, it’s not to make us feel bad or guilty or stuck in shame. Instead, the process is designed to make us feel free and clean and joyful. If you missed Sunday’s service, please make time to give it a look this week. If you were there or watched online, you might want to give it another viewing because there may be more that God wants to free you from.

Thank you to those who supported our Drive-Thru Food Drive last Friday. We’ve typically been filling around 42 banana boxes, but this week, we filled 73!!! I am so amazed at your continued generosity. If you want, you don’t have to wait for a food drive. You can stop by Interfaith Food Ministry and donate your non-perishable food items there. Our next
Drive-Thru Food Drive is Friday, September 25, from 8:00 to 10:30am.

Kimberly and I had a blast Sunday evening with the kids and parents who came to their Block Party and Back to School Jam. I want to give a big shout out to the staff, volunteers, and parents who helped make this so fun and inspiring as they focused on friendship.

Parents, we continue to look for the opening for us to be able to offer opportunities for your children to engage spiritually with us. We’re going to try to move toward having a kid’s worship experience beginning September 13. Our plan (of course we’re ready to pivot if necessary) is to offer an option for families of preschool and grade school kids at 9:00 and 11:00am. Each gathering will be limited to 14 kids, so registration is a must. I appreciate Bobby and his team for doing the diligent work to make sure we have a safe environment for all.

On Sunday we’ll continue our RISE UP series by looking at Nehemiah 10. Last week we ended chapter 9 with God’s people making a commitment to live for Him. On Sunday, we’ll take a look at the elements of that commitment and how God wants us to be like them.

During this time when it’s impossible for us all to be on campus together, please make sure to stay engaged online if you can’t be here with us either outside or inside. Our services will continue to be streamed live at 9:00 and 11:00am, or you can watch them on demand any time you want right from our
website or APP. Here’s an idea: When you’re watching online, please invite your friends to join you. If you haven’t downloaded the TCC APP, just go to the APP store and search for TCC GRASS VALLEY and download it today.

Our outdoor venue is for people who want to be able to sing and sit outside during the service. We have tents and fans outside. Each week we’ll continue to adapt and flex as we expand that opportunity at both 9:00 and 11:00am.

During this season we are a church of people who gather together both online and onsite, indoors or outdoors to offer our worship to God.

Joyfully living everyday life on mission in intimacy with Jesus and others,

I hate to tell you this, but it’s really easy to go to church, sing the songs, hear the message and still sleepwalk through your faith. But you don’t want that, and neither do I. We don’t gather to go through the motions. We gather to be awakened. To be changed. To leave different than we came. Yet even the best rhythms can become routine if we’re not careful. So here’s the question for each of us to wrestle with: Am I actually being changed? This Sunday will be a much-needed wake-up call for our church, an invitation to rediscover what it means to live like God is still at work in our lives, just as He was in the book of Acts. Have you ever wished God would just tell you exactly what to do? We want the roadmap, the right direction, the unmistakable sign that tells us what comes next. But often, God doesn't give us all the details. So how do we make wise decisions while still depending on Him? This Sunday, we'll discover how faith and reason work together as we continue our journey through Acts. Right after second service, we'll also have our quarterly Growth Path classes. Growth Path is your opportunity to take the next step in your journey of following Jesus at Twin Cities Church. Lunch and childcare are provided. Learn more and sign up. Most of us don’t wake up trying to carry the weight of the world. We simply add one more responsibility. One more expectation. One more obligation. One more thing to prove. Before long, we’re exhausted — not because life is hard, but because we’re trying to hold together things we were never meant to hold together. What if freedom begins, not by trying harder, but by laying down a burden you were never meant to carry? I’d love to explore that question with you this Sunday as we continue our journey through Acts. Have you ever noticed how easy it is to pray when life is going well... and how strangely difficult it can become after enough disappointment? Most of us haven’t stopped believing in God. But many of us have quietly stopped expecting Him to move. After enough unanswered prayers, deferred hopes, and painful circumstances, it’s easier to lower our expectations than risk being disappointed again. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering why prayer feels harder than it used to, or why it has become more of a last resort than a first response, then this message is for you. We spend so much of our lives trying to be noticed. We chase influence, recognition, and the feeling that we’re making a difference. But what if the people who change the world are often the ones no one remembers? This weekend in Acts, we’ll meet a man who’s easy to overlook, yet whose quiet faithfulness helped shape the future of the Christian movement. His story challenges everything our culture says about success, significance, and what it means to live a life that truly matters. It’s easy to think that becoming more like Jesus requires us to separate ourselves from the world around us. But what if we’ve misunderstood what it means to follow Jesus and live righteously? This Sunday, we’ll continue our journey through the book of Acts as Peter discovers that God’s law was never intended to build barriers, but bridges. We’ll wrestle with a question that every follower of Jesus needs to answer: Have I been living as an ambassador to my community, or have I been insulating myself from it? I think you’ll find that this story speaks directly into the way we live today. Speaking of living as ambassadors to our community, one of the ways we get to put that into practice is through Hope for Nevada County this Saturday from 9am-noon at Nevada Union High School. Thousands of our neighbors will come for practical help like backpacks, school supplies, shoes, haircuts, and other resources. It’s a simple opportunity to reflect the heart of Jesus through tangible acts of love. If you’d like to find out more about the event, visit hope4nevadacounty.org . We all long to see God do the extraordinary. We pray for breakthroughs, miracles, and unmistakable displays of His power. But what if, in our fixation on things only God can do, we’ve overlooked our part? This Sunday, as we continue our journey through Acts, we'll discover a surprising pattern in the way God accomplishes His purposes — one that has the power to reshape the way we think about faithfulness, ministry, and our everyday lives. Also, don't miss the One Voice Worship Night this Saturday from 6-8pm here at Twin Cities. Churches from across Nevada County will gather as one body to worship Jesus together. We'd love to have you join us for this special evening of unity and praise. Most of us want God's help. We want His peace when life feels chaotic. His guidance when we're uncertain. His power when we're struggling. But what if we're more interested in what God can do for us than in God Himself? This weekend, we'll continue our journey through Acts as we encounter a surprising story about a man who wanted God's power without God's lordship — and discover why that temptation is still alive today. Join us as we wrestle with a question that cuts straight to the heart: Do I want God, or do I just want what God can do for me? Also, just a reminder that tomorrow is our Ride for Hope motorcycle event that is raising shoes for Hope for Nevada County. Whether you ride or not, you’re welcome to swing by the church anytime between 10am-noon to watch the spectacle (and hopefully bring an unused pair of shoes for a student). Today is the final day of VBS, and I want to celebrate what God has been doing this week. Throughout this week, over 250 kids have been exploring one life-changing question: “Who is Jesus to me?” And yesterday, dozens of children made the eternity-altering decision to place their faith in Jesus as Savior and Lord. We are incredibly grateful for your prayers throughout the week and for the many, many volunteers who invested their time, energy, and love to make VBS possible. Thank you for helping us create an environment where kids could encounter Jesus in a meaningful way. This Sunday, we'll continue our journey through the book of Acts as we look at Stephen, one of those deacons we talked about last week, being confronted by the religious leaders. In a world filled with noise, conflict, and constant distractions, Stephen shows us what it looks like to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. This weekend, we will explore a key question that is pertinent to every one of us: What is shaping the way you see the world? Because what captures our attention ultimately shapes our perspective, influences our decisions, and determines how we interpret the circumstances around us.
