Receive Encouragement + Sunday Morning Resources

TCC • March 3, 2023

Wow, talk about snow! I would have never dreamed that we would have two major snowstorms in Nevada County the last two winters. Snowmageddon 2022 and Snowmess 2023 both left many of us reeling. I was without power for 72 hours in this last storm, and we received 20” of snow at my house! In my 31 years in Nevada County, I’ve never witnessed a snow event like we saw this week. I’m mostly referring to the number of days in a row where we received that much snow. And guess what? It’s supposed to snow again this weekend.

This gives me a chance to talk about our Sunday Snow Day Policy. Here it is: If we can get to church, we will have church no matter the weather. That’s it. If we can’t get there, we will alert you on Sunday morning by email or social media. Just a tidbit here – soon we will be able to deliver alerts by text since that’s the way most of us communicate in today’s world. Please make sure you make the safest decision for you as you choose what to do on a snowy day.

This Sunday we will do the following: Celebrate 31 years as a church, celebrate Jesus and His redemptive story as we watch 14 people get baptized, eat lots of donuts, and begin our new Message Series – Stand Firm. This message series will help us know how to stand firm in the face of adversity from those who stand against the Gospel message of Jesus. This is a perfect series for the time in which we live. The first message is Receive Encouragement. We will dig into 2 Thessalonians 1:1-12. When you read those verses before Sunday, you will be amazed at how much we need to comprehend and be enraptured by the truths of the justice of God. Folks, this series is one of the most sobering I remember us ever doing. I hope you will come learn as Paul talks to us about how to Stand Firm between now and the future when Jesus comes again. You won’t want to miss Sunday. If you don’t think it’s safe to drive – we are supposed to get another storm this weekend – please stay home and watch the service online.

You can attend every gathering in person, live stream online, or watch on demand. Please navigate through our website to find the schedule of messages and service. If you want to stream a service live or watch an archived message or service, you can find the links you need there. We welcome you to join us soon.

As we near the end of our Walking With Jesus series, we’re stepping into one of the most challenging and sobering teachings Jesus ever gave: His call to count the cost of following Him. Many of us first come to Jesus hoping He’ll fix what’s broken in our lives — and He often does. But Jesus also invites us into something deeper: a life of surrender, transformation, and daily choosing Him over our comfort, desires, and autonomy. As we’ll see this weekend, discipleship is costly, but what we gain in Christ is far more valuable than anything we lay down. If you’ve ever found yourself asking: Why does following Jesus sometimes feel so hard? What is He actually calling me to surrender? Is following Him really worth the cost? …this message is for you. Join us this Sunday as we explore what it truly means to take Jesus at His word and follow Him with our whole lives. You won’t want to miss it. In Luke 9, Jesus calls His followers to “deny themselves and take up their cross daily.” In a world that celebrates comfort and success, that’s a shocking invitation. Yet as we’ll see, it’s only by dying to ourselves that we discover what it truly means to live. This Sunday, as we continue our Walking With Jesus series, we’ll explore what it means to lay down our own desires and trust that God’s way is better — even when it costs us something. Because on the other side of surrender is life, freedom, and joy in Him. This Sunday also marks the end of daylight saving time, which means you get an extra hour of sleep, so I look forward to seeing you well rested and ready to learn. 😊 And don’t forget — tonight is our Fall Family Festival from 5–8pm ! This completely free, family-friendly event is a chance to shine the light of Jesus’ love into a night that’s often marked by darkness. Bring your family, invite your friends and join us as we love on our neighbors. I hope to see you there. This weekend, we’re continuing our Walking With Jesus series by exploring a topic that’s both fascinating and often misunderstood — spiritual authority. Throughout Luke’s Gospel, Jesus teaches and heals with astonishing authority. But what’s even more surprising is that He extends that same authority to His followers. What does that mean for us today? How do we understand and engage with the authority God has given His people? To help us navigate this conversation, I’ll be joined by my friend Dan Prout, founder of Sierra Ministries International . Together, we’ll look at what Scripture teaches about spiritual authority and how to walk in it with humility, faith, and confidence in Jesus. Last week, we saw how Jesus meets us with both grace and truth — grace that meets us where we are, and truth that calls us into something more. But that journey of transformation doesn’t happen automatically. There’s a battle taking place for what we believe about God, about others, and especially about ourselves. This Sunday, we’ll continue Walking With Jesus as we look at how He leads us out of the false identities and broken narratives that have shaped us, and into the freedom of knowing who we truly are in Him. I hope you will join us as we learn how to let go of the lies that hold us back and live in the truth that sets us free. It’s easy to compare ourselves to others and feel like we’re doing “pretty good.” Maybe not perfect — but at least better than t hem . But when we start measuring our worth that way, we miss the heart of God entirely. This Sunday, as we continue our Walking With Jesus series, we’ll look at a powerful moment in Luke’s Gospel that shows us how Jesus meets people with both grace and truth — and what that means for us today. Whether we’re weighed down by guilt or quietly confident in our own goodness, Jesus’ invitation is the same: come close and let His love change you. Jesus didn’t wait for people to come to Him — He intentionally moved toward outsiders, those the religious establishment considered untouchable, and reminded them that not only did God see them but loved them dearly. This Sunday, we’ll explore what it means to follow His example and love generously, extending God’s heart to those around us. Speaking of loving generously, Fall Family Festival is less than 4 weeks away! While it may seem counterintuitive for a church to have an event on Halloween, it’s our way of following Jesus’ example and radiating the light of God’s love into an otherwise dark night. Come help us share God’s love with our community. Bring a bag of individually wrapped candy with you to church on Sunday and then sign up to serve our neighbors at Fall Family Festival. We live in a world that buzzes with notifications and incessant noise. Our phones, our schedules, and even our own thoughts pull us in a thousand directions at once. It’s no wonder why so many of us feel restless, scattered, and spiritually dry. What if the greatest threat to our faith isn’t doubt, but distraction? What if our souls are starving for the very thing our fast-paced culture naturally distracts us from? This Sunday, as we continue our Walking With Jesus series, we’ll look at how Jesus navigated the constant pressures and demands for His attention without becoming overwhelmed — and how one of His most important practices could be the antidote our anxious, distracted souls desperately need. When Jesus says, “Follow Me,” it isn’t just an invitation to believe something new; it’s an invitation to walk with Him, to learn from Him, and to be shaped by His presence. Following Jesus always comes at a cost. But so does refusing to follow Him. This Sunday, in our Walking With Jesus series, we’ll consider what’s really at stake when we choose how to respond to His invitation to discipleship. Last week, we saw how Jesus’ ministry began with the Father’s blessing and identity spoken over Him . But what came next? Rejection, criticism, and pressure to compromise or conform at every turn. How did Jesus stand strong when others doubted, opposed, or even tried to silence Him ? He was secure in His Father’s love and empowered by the Holy Spirit. This Sunday, we’ll look at what it means to live with that same Spirit-filled confidence, rooted in God’s voice and empowered by His presence, not the world’s opinions.
